Do you cringe when you hear people talk about Google Glasses? So does Google, it seems. The company today released a set of branding guidelines for its developers to clarify how they can use the Glass™ icon and brand name in their products.

In this document, Google stresses that “Glass” can never be part of the name of a company that produces software for Glass, for example. You can call a product “Cat Facts for Glass” but never “Glass Cat Facts.” It’s okay to use “Glass” as a descriptor (Glass optics), though.

Google also stresses that whenever you use the “for Glass” construction in your logo, “for Glass” must be a smaller size than the rest.

Another rule states that Glass is always supposed to be capitalized and “is never plural or possessive.” This means, you aren’t supposed to say “”Wear Google Glasses” or “Swipe forward on Glass’s timeline.” I can see why the plural doesn’t make sense, given that the product name is Glass, but the only reason not to use the possessive, it seems, is that any word that ends with an ‘s’ always looks a bit off once it becomes a possessive.

One interesting guideline Google notes is that whenever users share content through Glass, developers are supposed to use the #throughglass hashtag “to categorize it for easy discoverability and aggregation” or “Sent through Glass” in emails.

Most of this is pretty straightforward (except for the odd rule around the possessive). It does show, however, that as more Glass software slowly becomes available now that the Glass Development Kit is in “Sneak Peak,” Google is starting to lay down a few more rules for developers.

Glass is a trademark of Google Inc.

The Guardian has become the latest Western media outlet to get blocked in China. For more than a year, China's Web-censoring authorities, unaffectionately known as the "Great Firewall of China," have blocked sites for The New York Times and Bloomberg, each of which published unsavory articles about wealth amassed by family members of Communist Party leaders. Other sites, including the Chinese-language versions of Reuters and The Wall Street Journal, have experienced temporary blocks. Interestingly, The Guardian's site has published no such scathing articles.

Sugar printing has always been difficult. Cooks were able to create sugar-based sculptures by hacking standard plastic printers but, in the end, the results have been, shall we say, less than sweet. Thankfully 3D Systems just launched the ChefJet line of 3D printers that can squirt out monochrome and full-color sugar sculptures.

The monochrome new printer will be in the sub-$5,000 range and be available later in 2014. There will be two models, the ChefJet 3D and the ChefJet Pro 3D. The Pro model is a full-color printer with a build volume 10x14x8 inches.

The standard model has a build volume of 8x8x6 inches.

The printers include a digital cookbook for so chefs can print crazy sugar objects without a degree in CAD/CAM modeling. 3D Systems recently purchased 3D sugar printing company Sugar Labs in August.

Drive

French startup Drive just raised $2.7 million (€2 million) in Series A funding from undisclosed business angels and institutional investors. The service is reminiscent of Chauffeur-privé or LeCab — it’s an Uber-like service that owns its cars and operates with fixed prices.

But is there enough room for yet another startup? Chauffeur-privé, LeCab, SnapCar and Uber are already fighting hard to take over the French market. As this industry is a very capital-intensive one, today’s funding round is a good indication for Drive’s future.

Prices seem to be relatively similar to LeCab’s. But Drive operates Mercedes cars, that may be the main difference. Thanks to the new influx of money, the company plans to have more than a hundred cars in Paris and to open shop in multiple European cities by the end of 2014. In other words, the five month old startup remains quite small but already has expansion plans in mind.

Back in November, LeCab raised $6.8 million (€5 million). At the time, the company said that it wanted to have 350 cars in Paris alone by the end of 2013. Drive won’t be as ubiquitous in Paris.

Unlike Uber, you can make a Drive reservation in advance, and you get a fixed price. After saying where you want to go, Drive gives you a price that doesn’t vary with the traffic. You know how much you are going to pay upfront.

As a reminder, legislation issues could slow down Drive’s growth. The French government is trying very hard to protect the taxi industry. Since January 1st, transportation services have had to wait 15 minutes before picking a customer up. Some companies stated that they won’t follow the decree, but others said that they will comply with the new rule.

Chauffeur-privé CEO Yan Hascoet said that the French startups would contest the government’s decision and have a good chance of winning — the end result will probably come in a few weeks. For now, it doesn’t seem to prevent Drive from raising a new round.

Drive bets on premium services, quality cars and relatively cheap prices. I still think there are too many transportation services in Paris. Drive is a serious contender, but we’ll have to wait to know who the two or three winners are.

Nvidia this week announced the Tegra K1, a 192-core super chip that brings its Kepler architecture to the mobile space. Kepler is used in what Nvidia claims is the fastest GPU on the planet, its GeForce GTX 780 Ti. Because the K1 will support the latest PC-class gaming technologies -- such as DirectX 11, OpenGL 4.4 and Tessellation -- it will be able to run the Unreal Engine 4 game engine, allowing PC- and console-class game play. The processor delivers the same graphics features as the Xbox One and PlayStation 4, according to Nvidia.
