Samsung on Friday rolled out its much-anticipated Galaxy S5 flagship smartphone in 125 countries worldwide, accompanied by a marketing and advertising blitz. The device was greeted with ambivalence. Some reports compared it unfavorably to the HTC One M8 and the 6-month-old iPhone 5S. Others said it offers only marginal improvements over the flailing S4, and some criticized it as bland. The S5 did not receive a universally chilly reception, though.

Having become the first company to formally meet the European Union's data protection rules, Microsoft is trying to turn its trustworthiness into business in privacy-wary Europe. "For customers who care about privacy and compliance, there is no more committed partner than Microsoft," wrote Microsoft General Counsel Brad Smith in a Thursday blog post. More so than in the U.S., data protection is a hot-button topic in Europe, especially in the wake of Edward Snowden's leaks.

Consumers can do little to protect themselves from the catastrophic Heartbleed bug. "Catastrophic is the right word," wrote security guru Bruce Schneier in his blog this week. "On the scale of 1 to 10, this is an 11." Heartbleed is an extension of the SSL/TLS protocol used to encrypt data in transit on the Internet. The most common evidence of SSL to consumers is the padlock icon displayed by URLs that begin with "https." Heartbleed is used to keep a secure connection alive.

A new partnership between Sonos and Google means that users of the Google Play Music app for Android now can stream music to their Sonos speakers directly from the app itself. Available in 25 countries, the new capability effectively eliminates the need to use Sonos' Controller app as an intermediary. It represents Sonos' first such integration partnership with a major music streaming service, but it likely won't be the last, said Kristen Bender, Sonos' senior product manager for music services.
