After an 18-month lull, Windows Phone took a step closer to an upgrade on Monday as Microsoft released version 8.1 of the OS to developers. Unlike most developer versions of software, however, consumers can download and run the latest edition of Windows Phone on their mobile device -- as long as they're willing to void its warranty until their carrier OKs the upgrade. Although developers and brave consumers can get their hands on Windows Phone 8.1 this week, it will be a few months before its fortunes in the market can be determined.

A total lunar eclipse in the early hours of Tuesday gave viewers in parts of the world a rare glimpse of what's sometimes called a "blood moon," due to the reddish hue it takes on as a result of dust in the atmosphere. Beginning at about 1:55 AM EDT on April 15, the eclipse lasted roughly three and a half hours -- peaking at 3:45 a.m. EDT -- and was visible in North America, South America and Australia, with partial visibility in parts of Asia, Africa and Europe. Lunar eclipses last much longer than solar eclipses do and are safe to view.

Google Glass, which has been the focus of considerable controversy, went on sale Tuesday -- for one day only -- at $1,500, with Android KitKat and new features that include improved battery life, photo bundles, photo replies and voice command sorting. However, one feature -- video calling -- has been eliminated because fewer than 10 percent of Explorer beta users employed it. "Today we hope to bring even more Explorers into the program to reflect an even more diverse group of people," said Google spokesperson Chris Dale.

It's been more than a week since news of the Heartbleed flaw launched a frantic scramble on the Web, but security professionals' palpitations haven't subsided. The OpenSSL Software Foundation has issued a fix, and Google, Cisco, Juniper Networks, Akamai and hordes of other companies have begun patching their products. The open source community "reacted very quickly to the vulnerability, which is good," said Diego Sor, head of security consulting services at Core Security. Predictably, scammers and spammers have climbed onto the Heartbleed solution bandwagon.

Twitter has agreed to close some accounts in Turkey, but the two sides are still at loggerheads over allegations of tax evasion and whether or not Twitter must maintain a physical presence in the country. Twitter VP of Global Public Policy Colin Crowell led a delegation of sorts to address the country's multifaceted grievances with the social media site. Twitter was banned in Turkey in March. Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan's administration followed that up with claims that the company was evading taxes and refusing to heed to Turkish law.
