The hottest -- and possibly craziest -- tech rumor of the week is, hands down, that Apple is in negotiations to acquire Beats Electronics for $3.2 billion. Based on a single report, the story has been fanned into a raging inferno faster than a wildfire on a hot August day. Unfortunately, the only cited source for the rumor is "people familiar with the deal." On the surface, the deal to acquire Dr. Dre's and Jimmy Iovine's Beats Electronics would give Apple a popular line of cool headphones as well as a nascent streaming music service.

As part of a deal with entertainment industry bodies, large UK Internet service providers will send letters to customers suspected of partaking in illegal downloads. The deal was hashed out by the BPI, which represents the British music industry, and the Motion Picture Association, which represents film. The final deal is lacking some key provisions for which the BPI and MPA had lobbied. For example, they had sought access to a database of illegal downloaders, and they wanted the ISPs' letters to warn repeat offenders about punitive measures.

If you have a story to tell -- even a dull one -- Adobe Voice can improve your presentation. The free app can't make your story more compelling, but it can give you a better shot at getting it across. Adobe Voice is available for the iPad 2 and above running iOS 7. To kickstart your use of Voice, Adobe offers sample slideshows and a tutorial that provides the essentials for creating a short video. Every story is made of pages, and your voice tells the story on each page.

AV Linux can turn a new or old PC, or an Intel-powered Mac box, into a workstation for audio/graphics/video enthusiasts. AV Linux is a specialty distro much in the style of the CAELinux distro for engineers and scientists and the Musix distro for audio and music production that I reviewed in recent weeks. AV Linux is not your typical Linux desktop. It has a custom-designed 32-bit updated 3.10.27-PAE low-latency Linux kernel. This contributes to creating a unique and very effective Linux OS workstation appliance for AV pros.

Scientists have created a computer simulation that not only models the evolution of the universe down to the formation of individual galaxies, but also matches astronomical observations. Unlike earlier efforts, the simulation depicts ordinary matter in the form of hydrogen gas from the very beginning. The Illustris project models a cubic section of the universe measuring 106.5 megaparsecs on each side. The Illustris simulation's starting point is the universe at the age of 12 million years.

Nintendo won't include same-sex romantic activities in English editions of an upcoming life simulator game. The company has faced pressure, including a fan-fueled social media campaign, to let users have gay relationships in Tomodachi Life, a game whose characters are modeled after real people. The company never meant for the game to be a "social commentary," Nintendo of America said in a statement. Instead, the game is meant to be "whimsical and quirky," with relationship options representing "a playful alternate world."

Despite coming from one of the world's most well-known tech companies, Microsoft, Windows Phone has a freakishly odd smartphone branding problem. From what I see out there, most consumers barely know what a Windows Phone is or how it works or why they might want one. Business users tend to be more aware of it -- particularly the PC laptop-toting ones -- but they often end up choosing an Android smartphone or even an iPhone instead. Now, Microsoft finally has a chance to create something meaningful for the mobile world.
