China's ambivalence about American technology has long been clear, but recently -- much to Linux fans' glee -- the nation kicked off what appears to be a fresh, trash-talking effort targeting Windows 8, in particular. First, China banned the OS from its government computers late last month, citing security concerns in the wake of XP's end of life. More recently, however, China Central Television followed up with a damning report suggesting Windows 8 is a threat to its national security.

As if the discovery of the Heartbleed flaw weren't enough woe for OpenSSL, more than half a dozen additional defects have been discovered in the code used to protect communication on the Web. Among them is one dubbed "Cupid" by its discoverers. The flaw can be used to compromise enterprise networks. Like Heartbleed, Cupid uses a malicious heartbeat packet to compromise a TLS connection. TLS, or Transport Layer Security, is used to secure communications on the Internet.

Instagram, Facebook's popular free mobile app for editing and sharing photos, has never had a reputation for subtlety. It's image-editing tools and filters have had more in common with a palette knife than a fine sable paint brush. That's changed, though, with the latest version of the app. Version 6.0 of Instagram, which has an estimated 200 million users, was released last week for both the Android and Apple mobile platforms. Unlike previous editions of the app, this one appears to be targeting a more creative audience.

When Dell and Apple first confronted each other in the 1990s, Dell was a startup and Apple was a mature company attempting to fight Dell's kind of fight. It didn't go well, and Apple almost failed. When the two companies faced off for the second time, Apple had been dramatically transformed by Steve Jobs into a much leaner, more-focused firm. Dell was having its own mid-life crisis, and Apple clearly won. As they square off for the third time, the two firms once again have changed. Apple is under new leadership, and Dell is private again.

Software developers routinely use open source components to boost productivity and improve the quality of their code. The problem for enterprises is that companies using open source must properly manage it and comply with its licensing, as with any third-party code. That becomes difficult to do when corporate leaders do not know their computer systems are running open source code. Even licensing compliance becomes an unwieldy threat when the coders themselves have a lackadaisical attitude toward copyrights and licensing requirements.
