Mozilla showcased the latest developments in its plan to offer inexpensive smartphones running the open source Firefox OS at the Mobile Asia Expo this week in Shanghai. They include reference designs for production in India; plans to launch the smartphones in India within the next few months; the addition of Chunghwa Telecom, Taiwan's largest operator, to the list of carriers supporting them; and demonstrations of new Firefox OS devices from ZTE and Alcatel.

Thousands of drivers blocked roads and participated in rallies to decry the service, which links users to drivers through a smartphone application. Residents in London, Paris, Berlin, Lisbon, Milan and Madrid all faced a day when regular cabs were not making pickups due to the drivers' strike. In London's Trafalgar Square, for instance, taxi drivers stopped cars and stayed in the streets, while handing out leaflets to others.

As if the discovery of the Heartbleed flaw weren't enough woe for OpenSSL, more than half a dozen additional defects have been discovered in the code used to protect communication on the Web. Among them is one dubbed "Cupid" by its discoverers. The flaw can be used to compromise enterprise networks. Like Heartbleed, Cupid uses a malicious heartbeat packet to compromise a TLS connection. TLS, or Transport Layer Security, is used to secure communications on the Internet.
