Google this week announced a hardware initiative to design and build new quantum information processors based on superconducting electronics. The effort is related to the launch last year of its Quantum Artificial Intelligence Lab. Physicist John Martinis, winner of the 2014 Fritz London Memorial Prize, leads a group of UCSB scientists who will collaborate with the Google team. "This is very exciting that John Martinis' group will join the Google effort," said Raymond Laflamme, Canada Research Chair in quantum information.

Microsoft on Thursday unveiled the Nokia Lumia 830, 730 and 735 smartphones, along with several accessories and feature updates, at the IFA 2014 consumer electronics show in Berlin. The 830 is the thinnest and lightest member of the Lumia family. It has a 10mp camera and is positioned as an affordable flagship. "The Lumia 830 looks to me like a high-end smartphone masquerading as a mid-range device," said Ramon Llamas, a research manager at IDC. "You have a 1.2 GHz quad-core CPU, 16 GB of storage expandable to 128 GB, and a 5-inch display."

Pharmaceutical giant AbbVie on Wednesday announced it was teaming up with Google-funded Calico, the life sciences initiative aimed at helping patients deal with diseases and other negative effects associated with aging. Under the terms of the partnership, both AbbVie and Calico will invest up to $250 million in the project, with the possibility of another $500 million each. That money will go toward understanding and fighting diseases such as cancer or neurodegenerative disorders that are common in the aging population.

Samsung and Oculus on Wednesday unveiled the Gear VR -- a virtual reality wireless headset optimized for Samsung's Galaxy Note 4 phablet, also announced Wednesday. The Gear VR -- or "Samsung Gear VR Innovator Edition," as Oculus describes it -- will be compatible with a wide range of film, gaming, 360-degree video, and educational and experiential content. It will be released later this year at a price yet to be announced. Targeting VR enthusiasts, developers and other early adopters, the Gear VR has broken new ground.
