Fires may be easy to start, but putting them out is a different matter. Case in point: the Systemd inferno. What started a few weeks ago as a relatively straightforward controversy over an oft-debated technology Visit the VMware Tech Center has now virtually blown up in Linux fans' faces. The latest flareup? None other than the suggestion that Linux be split in two. "I'd argue that to some degree it has already happened," began Google+ blogger Kevin O'Brien. "RHEL is very big in data centers, but who runs it as a desktop?"

Stanford and Duke Universities reportedly will use Apple's HealthKit in medical trials. Doctors at Stanford are working with Apple to let physicians track blood sugar levels for children with diabetes, while Duke is developing a pilot program to track blood pressure, weight and other measurements for patients with cancer or heart disease. The programs will roll out in a few weeks. "Mobile devices can increase healthcare effectiveness and lower healthcare costs," said Ezra Gottheil, a principal analyst at Technology Business Research.

Enterprise IT is a very serious matter, but you might not know it judging by the software tools that are often integral to its operations. The list of odd names in today's data centers and enterprise IT shops also highlights the ongoing trend of polyglot programming. Today's applications and services are based on a wider variety of application components and run on a wider array of infrastructure that includes bare metal servers, traditional data centers, virtual environments, and public, private or hybrid clouds.

The Obama administration threatened Yahoo with fines of $250,000 daily if it wouldn't comply with demands to hand over user information to the United States National Security Agency, Yahoo has disclosed. Yahoo had filed suit against the demands in 2007, citing the Fourth Amendment. "They basically said you must do this thing that you don't want to do or we'll put you out of business," said Daniel Castro, senior analyst at The Information Technology & Innovation Foundation.

Taken separately, last week's announcements from Apple, Intel and T-Mobile were impressive. Intel and T-Mobile basically announced they were going to explode the existing mobile market, changing it dramatically from what it is today. Apple embraced some slow-moving technologies, which should speed them up dramatically. Frankly, I don't think what Apple announced is in the same league, but it will have a big impact and drive change into the market. Of these three news-making companies, Intel is setting up to provide the biggest impact by far.
