Samsung on Sunday announced that it has resolved issues hindering the commercialization of 802.11ad standard 60-GHz WiFi technology. The company's solution maintains maximum speed by eliminating co-channel interference regardless of the number of devices on the network, using what it claims is the world's first method that allows multiple devices to connect simultaneously to a network. Samsung leveraged millimeter-wave circuit design and high-performance modem technologies, and developed a wide-coverage beamforming antenna.

If you're looking for an extravaganza on the scale of last month's new iPhone unveiling, chances are you won't find it at Apple's "Way Too Long" event to be held Thursday at its Cupertino headquarters. "This will be a very low-key event," said Gartner analyst Van L. Baker. "They're always low-key when they happen on campus." While no one knows for sure what Apple has up its sleeve, the consensus is that it will be refreshing its tablet and computer lines and releasing the prime time version of its desktop operating system, OS X Yosemite.

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency last week posted a video of an advanced concept ground vehicle under development in its Ground X-Vehicle Technologies program. It's not clear whether the vehicle in question is a light armored car or a tank, but DARPA wants to give it improved survivability through the use of advanced technologies. The vehicle will rely on speed rather than armor because the amount of armor needed for current threat environments is increasingly burdensome and ineffective against ever-improving weaponry, DARPA said.

Well it's a good thing we here in the Linux community had a refreshing and refocusing break recently, because last week it was back onto the hot coals once again. The Systemd inferno -- which Linux Girl is starting to think of as "The Blaze That Must Not Be Named" -- has spread even further, your trusty reporter is dismayed to report, extending now to encompass the entire FOSS community. HTC on Thursday debuted two new products for photography enthusiasts. One offering, the RE, is an L-shaped camera that doesn't have a viewfinder. The other is a new smartphone, the Desire Eye, which boasts a 13-megapixel front-facing camera for high-resolution selfies. With RE, HTC appears to be targeting the action set that has created a lucrative market for point-of-view camera makers like GoPro. "We are taking you out from behind the viewfinder and putting you back where you belong, at the heart of the action," said Peter Chou, CEO of HTC.

Tesla Motors on Thursday unveiled the "D" that CEO Elon Musk has been teasing -- a dual-motor, all-wheel-drive, higher-tech version of its Model S electric car. The new model offers better traction, increased driving range, automated features and even higher speeds, Musk said. From the outside, you won't be able to tell it from the current Model S, however. It will share the same exterior, but it will feature a slew of internal improvements, notably two motors -- one for the front wheels and one for the back.
