The first reviews are out on the Samsung Galaxy Note 4, unveiled last month in Berlin, and they're generally positive. "The best big-screen phone you can buy right now," screams one headline. "A phablet that can teach Apple a few things," says another. "I'm not sure where the good story is on this," said tech analyst Jeff Orr. "The Galaxy Note 4 is continuing down the Samsung innovation path on the larger display, and Apple with the iPhone 6 Plus is entering a segment where Samsung has most of the mindshare, if not also the revenue."

Google on Wednesday unwrapped Android 5.0 Lollipop, officially replacing the "Android L" code name by which the latest version of its mobile platform previously had been known. "Lollipop is our largest, most ambitious release on Android, with over 5,000 new APIs for developers," wrote Sundar Pichai, Google's senior vice president for Android, Chrome & Apps, in a blog post. "Lollipop is designed to be flexible, to work on all your devices and to be customized for you the way you see fit."

Microsoft on Tuesday released Skype Qik, a new mobile chat app that features short, self-destructing video messages that automatically self-destruct in two weeks -- or sooner if set to do so. Skype need not be installed on a mobile to use Qik, which runs on Android, iOS and Windows phones and is available for free from the Google Play, the iTunes App Store and the Windows Phone Store. With Skype Qik, Microsoft aims to capture some of the audience for lightweight communication apps such as SnapChat, WhatsApp and WeChat.

Open source developers apparently don't adhere to best practices such as using static analysis and conducting regular security audits, found Coverity's Spotlight report, released Wednesday. The Coverity Scan service, which is available at no charge to open source projects, helped devs find and fix about 50,000 quality and security defects in code last year. That number can be attributed in part to continuous improvement, which lets users find previously undetected defects.

Lenovo last week announced five new models in its Yoga product line, some running Windows and the others Android. Three are tablets -- the Tablet 2 Pro and the Tablet 2 running Android, and the Tablet 2 running Windows. The others are the Yoga 3 Pro and the Thinkpad Yoga 14 laptops. The Tablet 2 comes in 8- and 10-inch models, running Android or Windows. The Tablet 2 Pro runs Android. Actor and producer Ashton Kutcher was heavily involved in the development of the flagship Tablet 2 Pro, Lenovo said.

The days of in-boxes flooded with spam messages on an assortment of sordid subjects are a faint memory to most email users, but what spam has lost in volume it's gained in power. More than two-thirds of some 200 IT decision makers in companies with five to 1,000 employees said a spam incident in the last year had severely disrupted their business operations -- or halted them entirely -- in a survey GFI Software released last week. Those incidents can disrupt business in a number of ways, said GFI General Manager Sergio Galindo.
