Natural Machines this week took to the stage at the Web Summit in Dublin to demonstrate Foodini, a 3D printer that can be used to create pizza, pasta, burgers and a wide range of other savory and sweet foods. Users begin by choosing the recipe they want to print, either from the Internet-connected device's onboard touchscreen or from their own PC or mobile device. Foodini then offers instructions for the various ingredients that should be prepared and placed in its reusable capsules.

Palo Alto Networks on Wednesday reported that more than 400 apps infected with a malicious program it calls "WireLurker" have been downloaded 356,104 times by Chinese Mac owners from Maiyadi, an online app store unaffiliated with Apple. The malware does no harm to the Macs it infects but when the computer connects via USB to an iOS device -- an iPhone or iPad -- it delivers its malicious payload. "The Mac component only appears to be there to infect the iOS device," said Ryan Olson, intelligence director of Palo Alto Networks' Unit 42.

Google Wallet reportedly has experienced a sudden surge in use: Weekly transactions are up 50 percent, and the number of new users has nearly doubled in a month. Obviously, the primary explanation for this sudden leap is Apple's entry into the mobile payments world. It introduced Apple Pay in September and rolled it out officially October 20. Google Wallet has been available for real-world use since 2011 -- and it works with all major credit cards. So, was the U.S. market just not ready for mobile payments, or did Apple make it ready?

In the months leading up to Tuesday's mid-term elections, suspicions were rife about the possibility of Facebook influencing the outcome. Facebook had joined Google, Twitter and other high-tech companies in urging people to vote, but skepticism about its motives ran high because in previous elections, it had turned its call to voters into sociological experiments, trying different approaches on different groups. Facebook in essence said that this year it would roll out the same message to all 100 million or so U.S. members.

Russian cyberspies have a reputation for stealth, so it's unusual when two digital espionage operations linked to the Kremlin come to light in a week. FireEye early last week released a report detailing how hackers working for the Russian government have been using sophisticated techniques over a seven-year period to penetrate computer systems at governments, military branches, security organizations and even NATO. The report contrasts the Russian operation with similar cyber-raids by hackers affiliated with the Chinese government.
