As thoughtful as mobile phone makers are when they design their products, there are always punters who want something that isn't there and are willing to hack a device to get it. In the Android world such a hack is called "rooting" a phone; in the iOS world, it's called "jailbreaking." Either can turn a phone into a can of worms for retailers. "Jailbroken phones aren't always indicative of a problem, but in a majority of cases there's a higher correlation of fraud than there is with normal phones," said Scott Olson, VP of product at Iovation.

It's no secret that the Linux community has been in a state of upheaval these last few months, thanks to a little piece of technology known as "Systemd." That the strife has been divisive hardly can be disputed. That it's been distracting us from more important matters is the case Linux Girl would like to make today. Need an example? Here you go: When was the last time you participated in a rousing revival of the good old "Year of Linux on the Desktop" debate? Hard to remember, isn't it? That's because it's been a long time.

Elon Musk, CEO of both SpaceX and Tesla Motors, soon may be venturing into new territory: the Internet satellite sector. Musk reportedly is working with ex-Googler Greg Wyler, founder of WorldVu Satellites, on a $1 billion project to develop relatively small and inexpensive models that can be used to provide Internet access around the globe. Some 700 diminutive satellites reportedly are part of the pair's plans. Currently, the largest fleet of satellites is roughly a tenth of that number.

Texting while driving is dangerous. We know that intuitively; we know it because the statistics say so; we know it because we have seen any number of public service announcements warning of its hazards. A whopping 98 percent of respondents in a recent survey of people who text at least once a day acknowledged the danger of texting while driving -- yet most admitted to doing it anyway. The survey, conducted by David Greenfield, founder of The Center for Internet and Technology Addiction, was sponsored by AT&T.

Welcome to another installment of every tech-loving optimist's and misanthrope's favorite look at the week's most wondrous and pitiful new gadgets. Ahead, for your delight and dismay, are studies of a wearable walkie-talkie-type communication device, a 360-degree action camera, a tiny 3D printer, a smart camera attachment, and a clever mobile roaming solution. I propose a new litmus test to measure the stylishness of wearables: If it wouldn't look good on a beautiful Hollywood star attending the Oscars, then it won't look good on anyone.
