Microsoft is returning to one of its biggest franchises with the announcement of a new Halo game, set to debut next year for the Xbox One. Accompanying the release of the title is a new TV show based on the series. The release of Microsoft's latest console, the Xbox One, provided the opportunity to rethink how to move the franchise forward while highlighting the console's assets, developer 343 Industries said. The company is building Halo 5: Guardians from the ground up for the platform.

Xiaomi fired a new salvo in its attempt to compete with major names like Apple and Samsung as it introduced its first tablet, the Mi Pad. The 7.9-inch Android device -- which has the same-size surface as the iPad mini -- uses an Nvidia quad-core Tegra K1 processor and will be manufactured by Foxconn, cofounder and CEO Lei Jun announced. The Mi Pad includes 2 GB of RAM, WiFi connectivity, and either 16 GB or 64 GB of on-board storage, though it can support up to an additional 128 GB of storage through microSD connectivity.

Flappy Bird creator Dong Nguyen this week said that the wildly popular mobile game will return in August and also that he is working on a brand-new offering. After dropping a tantalizing hint back in March, Nguyen on Wednesday said the new Flappy Bird will deliver multiplayer capabilities and be "less addictive." On Thursday, however, he said he was not its creator. "'Flappy Bird: New Season' is not mine," he tweeted. Meanwhile, "I am making a new game," he wrote later that day, "so people can forget about Flappy Bird for a while."

At a meeting with the press earlier this year, F-Secure Chief Research Officer Mikko Hypponen -- yes, the man who sparked the angry exodus of a small group of malware vendors from the RSA security conference after learning that RSA had worked with the NSA to make a pseudo-random number generator known to be insecure the default choice in its security software -- mentioned the company would soon unveil Freedome, a cloud-based service that would be pretty much the bees' knees for protecting mobile devices.
