Samsung has unveiled its long-awaited Galaxy Alpha smartphone featuring a metal frame and a 4.7-inch HD Super AMOLED display. "We have taken a new approach to smartphone design with the Galaxy Alpha, focusing on sophisticated design techniques and compact construction, while building upon the Galaxy experience," said Samsung spokesperson Ashley Gregory. Despite the device's new metal frame, solid finish and lightweight design, however, the Galaxy Alpha "still provides users with the same powerful hardware and features," he added.

The NSA is working on a new program codenamed "MonsterMind" that will automate the monitoring of traffic patterns on the Internet to look for attacks, whistleblower Edward Snowden revealed. When it detects an attack, MonsterMind will automatically block it from entering the U.S. cyberinfrastructure. It also will automatically fire back at the server from which the attack was launched. That could be a problem, he said, because such attacks can be spoofed -- routed through the servers of innocent third parties.

Microsoft has some good news for action-cam fans who like to capture their outdoor adventures in video. It's found a way to bring time-lapse photography to first-person video footage. Called "Hyperlapse," the technology can shrink hours of video into minutes without the jitter, shake and artifacts previously associated with the time-lapse process. That can be very useful to first-person camcorder enthusiasts who want to give others the feel of a rock climb or bike trip, for example, without forcing them to sit through hours of uneventful video.

The inventors of Apple's Siri personal assistant have launched an independent effort that could make their first offspring look kind of dumb. Billed as "the global brain," Viv aims to radically simplify the world by providing an intelligent interface to everything. "They are trying to abstract Siri's [natural-language processing] interface so you could apply it into other applications and domains," said Tempo AI founder and CEO Raj Singh. "For example, what if I wanted to integrate a Siri-like interface into the Yelp app or the Expedia app?"

The connected car is a battlefield among technology purveyors fighting to get their hardware plugged into the vehicle's network bus. Open source technology is becoming a key contender. OEMs are sorting through a garage full of options from versions of embedded Linux to the Automotive Grade Linux distro and the Android car platform. The connected car concept is picking up speed as a vehicle intelligence system in its own right. It is turning the common car into a fully functional communications center on wheels.
