A new crowdsourced Kickstarter project has blasted out of the gate and racked up more than $1,000,000 in funding -- its goal was a modest $100,000 -- with 34 days to go. The project? The Anova Precision Cooker. At first glance, the Anova Precision Cooker looks like a massive electronic thermometer with a plug-in cord. It's used for the sous-vide style of cooking, which is cooking food in sealed plastic bags inside a temperature-controlled water bath. That's right, you place a slab of beef inside a plastic bag then cook it in a pot of hot water.

The Reveton Gang is at it again. This time, though, they're targeting users of Android phones -- typically visitors to porn sites. The gang that pioneered the idea of locking up a target's computer and demanding a ransom to unlock it has turned its attention to the rapidly growing mobile market. Once Reveton mobile infects a phone, it will display a bogus warning from a fractured local law enforcement authority. In the U.S. it's "Mandiant U.S.A. Cyber Security/FBI Department of Defense/U.S.A. Cyber Crime Center."

Parrot has added a new model to its line of airborne drones -- the Bebop. Demonstrated in San Francisco over the weekend, the lightweight Bebop includes some snappy features, such as built-in image stabilization, a 14-megapixel camera with a fish-eye lens, and support for the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset. Although a price hasn't been announced, the drone is expected to hit a sweet spot between $500 and $1,000. Early reviews have been positive.

Twitter has launched a new feature that gives people the power to silence fellow tweeters without having to unfollow them. The feature is designed to give users more control over what pops up in their daily feeds. If someone mutes a follower, the muted user's tweets and retweets won't show up in the muter's feed, and notifications about that user's activity will not appear. The muted user would still be able to retweet, reply to or favorite the muter's Twitter activity, but none of that would appear in the muter's time line.

Search engines could have a profound influence on voters, according to psychologist Robert Epstein, whose recent study chronicles the impact of what he dubbed the "search engine manipulation effect." Epstein has not produced any evidence that search engines intentionally manipulate elections. Even so, he claims the phenomenon is legit. This is not a new topic for Epstein; he added to his previous body of work by using India's recent national elections as a case study.
