NPR last week launched a mobile app that gives modern listeners a new way to access personalized radio content. NPR One provides mobile device users a stream of news stories based on their preferences. They can curate a playlist of their favorite NPR podcasts -- such as Fresh Air, for instance -- as well as stories aired on their local public radio station. The app, which is available for free for iOS and Android, is designed to work better the more the user listens and provides feedback.

Tesla and Panasonic last week signed what is effectively a memorandum of understanding regarding their collaboration on Tesla's Gigafactory -- a large-scale battery manufacturing facility. The agreement sets out the responsibilities of both partners, but there will be further discussions over the details. When completed sometime in 2017, the Gigafactory will address one of the major problems holding back production of Tesla's electric vehicles: the shortage of batteries.

Researchers have developed an algorithm to extract audio information from video footage. They recovered intelligible speech from a video of a potato chip bag that was shot at a distance of 15 feet behind soundproof glass. The team also obtained useful audio signals from videos of aluminum foil, the surface of a glass of water, and the leaves of a potted plant. Objects vibrate when hit by sound, creating a subtle visual signal that is usually invisible to the naked eye. The researchers sought to reconstruct the sounds causing such vibrations.

The Age of the Connected Car is dawning. The Linux Foundation is positioning an open source Linux OS to take the front seat in steering carmakers to adopting Automotive Grade Linux as the engine driving all in-car electronics. Today's automobile has from 60 to 100 sensors to control everything from climate to airbags and dozens of vehicle components. That number could double as cars get smarter. The so-called "smartcar" will use these sensors to do much more than give the driver a hands-free option for changing lanes, breaking and parking.
