Enterprise IT is a very serious matter, but you might not know it judging by the software tools that are often integral to its operations. The list of odd names in today's data centers and enterprise IT shops also highlights the ongoing trend of polyglot programming. Today's applications and services are based on a wider variety of application components and run on a wider array of infrastructure that includes bare metal servers, traditional data centers, virtual environments, and public, private or hybrid clouds.

The Obama administration threatened Yahoo with fines of $250,000 daily if it wouldn't comply with demands to hand over user information to the United States National Security Agency, Yahoo has disclosed. Yahoo had filed suit against the demands in 2007, citing the Fourth Amendment. "They basically said you must do this thing that you don't want to do or we'll put you out of business," said Daniel Castro, senior analyst at The Information Technology & Innovation Foundation.

Google has purchased Lift Labs, which produces battery-operated utensils that make it easier for people with essential tremor or Parkinson's disease to eat their meals. Parkinson's patients' hands shake, making it difficult for them to eat or drink. Lift Labs' products, offered under the "Liftware" name, cancel more than 70 percent of tremors. "There's a lot going on right now in technology-centric innovation in Parkinson's," said analyst Daniel Ruppar. Lift Labs is working on other products, including attachments for painting and craftwork.

It's usually around here that I introduce the column and tease the agenda, but since absolutely nothing happened in the gadget world this week, I'm going to take it easy. Oh, wait -- sorry. Apple happened. Welcome to a special edition of Gadget Dreams and Nightmares, a weekly peek at just-announced gadgets. Of course, the big topic is Apple's iPhone 6 and the company's first wearable, the Apple Watch. For dessert, there's a set of headphones that plug into the Lightning port on iPhones and iPads.

Verizon in the first half of next year will launch an Internet TV service that offers a selection of custom channels as well as a bundle of content from the Big Four networks, according to reports. Represented in the mobile-minded bundle will be not only content from ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC, but also millennials-focused programming from DreamWorks Animation's Awesomeness TV, Verizon CEO Lowell McAdam reportedly said at a conference on Thursday. Perhaps even more promising, a la carte services apparently will be a key part of the future offerings.

Apple's new iPhones didn't take center stage at its product launch this week. "The fact that they are ho-hum is interesting in itself," said Nick Spencer, a senior practice director at ABI Research. "Apple is now a company that follows rather than leads." Apple is "at least 18 months late with a large screen device," he pointed out. Further, its Apple Pay mobile payment feature is "not exactly new, although Apple may perform the characteristic trick of perfecting it so the consumer actually adopts it -- not a trivial achievement."
