"So simple a child could do it" -- I have heard that expression abused often in advertising. Yet it aptly applies to the Kano computer kit. Kano is a computer and coding kit that is suitable for all ages. Well, to be truthful, Kano's step-by-step instructions in the included booklets and its simplified Linux-based operating system target kids aged 6 to 14. That said, the hands-on method it uses to teach basic computer structure and coding principles will work for kids of all ages.

In the months leading up to Tuesday's mid-term elections, suspicions were rife about the possibility of Facebook influencing the outcome. Facebook had joined Google, Twitter and other high-tech companies in urging people to vote, but skepticism about its motives ran high because in previous elections, it had turned its call to voters into sociological experiments, trying different approaches on different groups. Facebook in essence said that this year it would roll out the same message to all 100 million or so U.S. members.

Facebook recently announced that it was providing access directly over the Tor network. Its purpose was to let users access Facebook without losing the cryptographic protections provided by the Tor cloud. Facebook is providing an SSL certificate which cites its onion address. It will add onion address support for its mobile site later. The Tor link will work only in Tor-enabled browsers. The initial response to Facebook's announcement was overwhelmingly positive. However, some responders expressed concern over the use of JavaScript.

HP on Tuesday announced the HP Omen notebook PC, a laptop designed with hardcore gamers in mind. Available for order in the U.S. starting at $1,500, the Omen combines performance, portability and style, the company said. The Omen features an industrial design that was engineered to manage heat. It has dual fans that pull cool air through the bottom of the system, and rubber feet that elevate it to help channel in cool air. These design features are necessary, as the Omen packs some serious hardware inside its CNC-milled aluminum case.

Christopher Hart, acting chairman of the NTSB, which is investigating last week's crash of Virgin Galactic SpaceShipTwo, on Monday delivered his final press briefing on the initial stage of the investigation. In an earlier report, Hart had said copilot Michael Alsbury, who died in the crash, prematurely moved a lever that unlocked the "feathering" mechanism, which would release two fins to slow down the spacecraft. Hart clarified on Monday that it was not known whether Alsbury or copilot Peter Siebold had moved the feathering lever.

Rumors of a larger-screen iPad 'Pro' have been floating around since early this year. Most of them have suggested variations on a supposed 12.9-inch screen size. As soon as they rise, though, they're buried by another news wave. The latest to surface is a report in a Japanese tech blog. The upcoming iPad Pro reportedly will have a 12.2-inch screen and not the more widely rumored 12.9-inch screen. In addition, the iPad Pro will be thicker than an iPhone 6 but thinner than an iPhone 6 Plus.
